Maybe breaking the ice can be achieved in a more subtle way. Whether they didn't see it coming, it sure hit them right between the eyes.
It's good to start with a refreshed and energised mind. Even if they feel uncomfortable that emotion has passed now to have slept on it.

In the forest; either deal with matters from a distant where that mountain can just about be seen. Or, get close up to where their mind works, yet it is like a storm spiralling out of control. Whichever way to confront these obstacles is to be done so with knowledge and precaution.
